Lieh Sugai is a visual artist born in Japan and based in New York. She draws on her dual perspective as a Japanese immigrant living in the United States to inform her photographic and video work.
A former student at Pratt Institute, she was awarded the 2024 En Foco Photography Fellowship and was named a finalist for the 2024 Penumbra Foundation Workspace Program.
This year, she is the winner of the Premi Fotografia Femina, awarded by @fisheyelemag and the @incadaques_festival, for her series Kaikou, which means “encounter” in Japanese.
Unable to return to her native Japan, she sought out subjects in America that resonated with her own memories - leading her to reflect on the meaning of home.
Her work blends various photographic techniques, such as analog processes and chemigrams, to explore our relationship to memory and remembrance
