Jake Chessum’s naturally spontaneous and exuberant approach to photography has led to a long and varied career. His timeless and engaging celebrity portraits have appeared in many prestigious magazines including GQ, Men’s Journal, New York Magazine, Glamour, Paper, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Magazine and Esquire. The range of celebrities he has been commissioned to shoot span the worlds of film, politics, sports and music and includes: Robert De Niro, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Douglas, Mickey Rourke, Vince Vaughn, Chris Rock, Jennifer Connelly, 50 Cent, Rush Limbaugh, Hillary Clinton, Shaun White, Alec Baldwin, Reggie Bush, Spike Lee, Coldplay, Kofi Annan, Sir Ian McKellen, Bill Gates…the list goes on and on. Chessum studied graphic design at St. Martin’s School of Art and after graduating began his photography career in London, where his first commission was for The Face magazine. This led to an enduring relationship with the title. The Face sent him to NYC and LA where he got a taste of life and work in the United States. In 1999 Chessum moved permanently to NYC, where he still lives with his wife and daughters. With writer Amy Larocca, Chessum created “The Look Book” column for New York Magazine. This body of work resulted in the best selling book “The New York Look Book – a gallery of street fashion” published by Melcher media in 2007. Chessum’s first monograph “Rubbish”, a collection of images of trash on the streets of cities he has visited throughout the world, was published by Auditorium Editions in 2008. Four images from the book were selected for American Photography 25. He has also created witty and unique images for a range of advertising clients including IBM, Microsoft, Levi’s 501, Fossil, Toyota, Nike, Chase Bank, Adidas, HSBC, Rdio, The Red Cross, and Reebok, among many many others.
