In 1996, i-D asked me to cast “New York’s New Cool.” It wasn’t about celebrities or followers. It was writers, artists, actors, DJs, musicians, downtown kids, people opening storefronts, people with point of view. Many became culturally iconic. Some were already legends in their own corners of New York. What mattered was energy, individuality, talent, and point of view. Looking at this now, 30 years later, I’m realizing I’m asking myself the same question again while working on a new New York portfolio: What does New York feel like today?
