Born in 1963 in Connecticut, David LaChapelle is a photographer and director who works on the turf of advertising, fine art, entertainment and fashion.
He is known internationally for his exceptional talent in combining a unique hyper-realistic aesthetic with profound social messages.

What brought him to the top of the art world were his photos of some of the most recognizable faces on the planet he made with his surreal, unique and often humorous style.
His photos, as blinding as they are, have an intense penetrating force. "I believe in a visual language that should be as strong as the written word."

LaChapelle’s photography career began in the 1980’s when his work caught the eye of Andy Warhol, who offered him his first job as a photographer at Interview Magazine. Before long, he was shooting striking covers for Italian Vogue, French Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Rolling Stone, i-D...

Once interested in exploring themes of mortality and transcendence through fine art – mostly black and white images - David then decided to go into a 'full Pop art mode'.

After establishing himself as a fixture in contemporary photography, David, decided to branch out a bit. 
He began directing music videos for numerous artists. documentary films, and even a few live theatrical events – most notably Elton John’s The Red Piano.

His burgeoning interest in film led him to make the short documentary Krumped, an award-winner at Sundance from which he developed RIZE, a feature film that was chosen to open the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

He has published numerous books of his work, including 'Hotel LaChapelle', 'Artists and Prostitutes', 'Heaven to Hell', 'LaChapelle Land' and more recenrly 'Good news part II' and 'Lost and found part I '.

David LaChapelle’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Londonthe National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
