Born in Como, Massimo Vitali is a Contemporary Art Photographer who lives and works in Lucca, Italy. He has gained worldwide recognition with his series of Italian beach panoramas, developing a new approach to portraying the world.

Massimo was gifted a camera at the age of twelve and quickly developed a passion for photography. He later studied at the London College of Printing in the 1960’s, before a career in photojournalism followed by cinematography in film and television.

He later concentrated fully on his personal photography projects - images of people enjoying themselves on a grand scale, shot on large format. In 1994, at a time of drastic political changes, Massimo started to observe his fellow countrymen very carefully while depicting a “sanitized, complacent view of Italian normalities”.

Massimo went on to be commissioned by major publications including New York Times, Vanity Fair, Condé Nast, National Geographic, Vogue Italia, Wallpaper, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times.

He has released various monographs with Steidl including BEACH & DISCO in 1999, LANDSCAPE AND FIGURES in 2004, NATURAL HABITATS in 2011, ENTERING A NEW WORLD and SHORT STORIES in 2019. His images are included in countless other photographic books and anthologies.

In 2022, Massimo Vitali was awarded The Agents Club GRAND PRIZE FASHION AWARD for his Vogue Italia cover.
His large-scale color images have been exhibited worldwide in important museums and foundations including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, (Madrid), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Centre Pompidou et Musée National d’Art Moderne (Paris).
