Viviane Sassen was born in Amsterdam but spent the first three years of her childhood in Africa. She first studied fashion design before turning to photography and eventually receiving a MFA in fine art from the Royal Academy in Arnhem.

She is of the generation of artists that alternate personal, editorial, and commercial work and embrace an interdisciplinary attitude. She says, "You should always be able to judge a photograph on different grounds, on political, social, emotional, but also on personal grounds."
