‘Halsman: Light and Shadows,’ a curated selection of photographs by Philippe Halsman (@philippe_halsman_official), presented by his grandson Oliver Halsman Rosenberg —(@oliver_halsman_rosenberg) multi-disciplinary artist, writer, archivist, and co-director of the Philippe Halsman Estate. Currently he is working on a feature length Documentary film on Halsman’s unknown origin story.

Known as the star maker, Halsman’s iconic portraits of celebrities and politicians defined the visual language of mid-century America, appearing across 101 Life Magazine covers. This selection weaves together the iconic and the overlooked, from well known subjects to outtakes and recently unearthed 1930’s glass plate photographs discovered in a crate from his Paris years.

“I grew up around my grandfather’s iconic images of celebrities, but I was always drawn to discover the stranger images and the ones buried deep within the archive. Somehow I like the forgotten ones and the outtakes, and try to use my role as curator/archivist to bring these images out of the shadows and into the light. I must say I love Black and White photography, and the dimensionality that Halsman’s lighting gives his subjects. From serious to beautiful, from funny to otherworldly, my grandfather left such a variety of imagery behind for me to elevate and combine in new ways. Recently I discovered a crate of his 1930s glass plate photos, so I included some of those in this selection with a mix of his more well know subjects and outtakes which speak to me.”
