Join us this Thursday, September 24 for “Seen and Centered: Black Portraiture,” an AIPAD x PICTO New York talk exploring the history and evolution of Black portraiture. As the photographic medium marks its bicentennial across 2026 and 2027, the conversation brings together Imani Williford, Curatorial Assistant, Photography, Fashion and Material Culture at the Brooklyn Museum, with visual artists Lola Flash [@flashnine9] and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn [@laylahb] to discuss their practices and place within the history and evolution of Black portraiture. Together, they will consider what it means to create images of oneself and one’s community, and how photography can serve as a means of documenting lived experience, claiming visibility, and shaping the histories that will be seen and remembered in the future.
