In conversation with Spring
Based between Tokyo and Venice, artist @kensukekoike uses deconstruction and reconstruction to breathe new life into archival portraits, transforming them into entirely new narratives.
Working from his collection of over 60,000 images, Koike treats each portrait as both a medium and a constraint—studying their unique qualities and limitations with care. This often requires significant time to precisely understand their composition before any manipulation begins.
Guided by the principle of ”nothing more, nothing less,” Koike reshapes each image without adding or removing a single element—giving rise to surprising, poetic transformations that challenge perception and memory.
Discover more about his meticulous process and the transformative power of constraint in an interview with @laudoreth available at springstudios.com/culture.
