Artist Spotlight: High Jump by @lennertmadou This week’s Artist Spotlight features Lennert Madou, a 25-year-old photographer and filmmaker from Antwerp, Belgium. With roots in photography, Lennert discovered his path to filmmaking in 2021 during the creation of High Jump, his first short. The film depicts Otto, who lives in a remote village while his boyfriend, a professional dancer, lives far away. From a distance, Otto finds comfort in his lover’s choreography. “High Jump is a personal story inspired by my own life. My partner, a ballet dancer, and I spent years in a long-distance relationship. I was fascinated by how someone so far away could still feel so close. Dance, my partner’s instrument, became the language of the film, embodying physical presence in a relationship where that presence was often absent. My partner also collaborated on the choreography. For me, film — and especially short film — should dare to experiment, to challenge form, and to explore new ways of seeing.”
