Artist Spotlight: Following a project at Glenogle Baths, the Edinburgh pool where she swam as a child, photographer @soo.burnell became fascinated by the architecture and quiet ritual of bathing spaces. Since then, she’s ventured to capture historic pools around the world, and most recently, traditional bathhouses in Japan for her series At The Onsen — A Journey to Stillness.
The work explores the rituals of the onsen, a hot spring bath that uses mineral-rich water from deep within the earth, and the sento, a public bathhouse found in urban areas that is also a gathering place within communities.
Soo captures the serenity within these spaces; the stillness and the deep sense of calm that await, along with the contrasts, from the rustic timber structures to the delicately detailed murals.
“This is a journey that explores and celebrates traditions; these places where people come to bathe, to rest, to connect with others, and to reconnect with their own stillness within.”
