WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU SEE THE GARMENT? Fashion, art, culture photographer and filmmaker Stephen Tayo (@stephen.tayo) departed from his known vivid palette to capture devotees of the Aladura movement, a strand of Pentecostal Christianity emerging from Yoruba communities between the 1910s and 1920s. His lens moves from flowing white robes and elaborate headwear to the bare feet that carry devotees through the streets of Lagos, bringing sight towards the garments sacred to the practice. The robe, known variously as sutana, aso-funfun, or simply “the garment,” carries weight beyond fabric. In Yoruba cosmology, white is sacred, tied to Obatala, the orisha of purity and creation.
