Cindy Joseph
D&G casting, NYC 1999

Reading about how fashion is finally embracing older women, I keep thinking about this moment.
When Steven Meisel asked me for a very natural woman in her 50s with grey hair, we took to the streets of New York to find her. It wasn’t a trend—it was actually really hard.
Women simply didn’t allow themselves to go grey then.
We found Cindy.
For me, beauty was never only about youth.
She had spent decades as a makeup artist. No one had ever asked her to model.
Steven saw her immediately.
That campaign led to Ford, and she became part of a very small group who quietly started to shift things.
She once said there used to be three of them at a go-see. Then ten. Then sometimes a room full.
Now it’s a movement.
She passed away at 67, but her impact stayed 🤍
