@mayamercer.studio is a self-taught French-American photographer. Much of her work was developed in North Carolina, where she directed local teenagers in visual narratives inspired by the social realities of the rural American Far West. Cult is a cinematic documentary photo series created with teenage girls and non-binary youth from rural America. Blending fiction and documentary, the project explores themes of control, disappearance, and rebellion in isolated communities. Maya Mercer's work reflects the lived reality of youth facing poverty, addiction, gender-based violence, and social neglect.
